Inside of Peugeot Onyx Blue High Tech Background

DISCOVER THE CONCEPT ONYX

21ST-CENTURY SUPERCAR

With its V8 engine in a central rear position, Onyx propels its admirers into a world of high performance, always under control, thanks to an intuitive driving position. Apart from its astounding looks, it explores new natural materials, to take efficiency even further.

Peugeot has never ceased to express its passion for innovation over its 204-year history and is one of the oldest vehicle brands. It is also the only one to offer a complete range of personal mobility products: bicycles, motor-cycles, cars, light commercial vehicles.

Onyx, Onyx Concept bike and Onyx Concept scooter are the expression of this vision of the future in their respective worlds.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

The honed bodywork is arresting with the striking contrast of its materials and colours. Fashioned by hand by a master craftsman, the wings and doors are made from a sheet of pure copper. The other body panels are made of carbon-fibre and painted matt black.

Cutting through the air with finesse, the front combines a vertical grille with slender full-LED lights with the surface limited to just what is necessary. The flow is then separated: part enters the heart of the car, flowing into the bodywork and structure to supply the engine with air.

The rear lights adopt the three-claw light signature, characteristic of Peugeot. They also bear little winglets that direct the top and lateral flows.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Forming an interface between the body and the passenger compartment, the doors provide easy access with their action in two movements. On opening, the outer copper skin separates from the inner door, moves sideways by a few centimetres and then pivots about its rotational axis.

The passenger compartment is bathed in a bright, natural atmosphere from the floor to the roof. Its design starts you thinking about intuitiveness and materials. Like the body, it is stripped of superfluous material, retaining only what is useful for producing parts and giving them strength.

Made of felt, compressed and stretched, the passenger compartment is modelled as a single-piece enclosure with no seams or connections. The dashboard is made of a new type of "wood", Newspaper Wood.  It is produced from old newspapers, assembled and compressed to form new blocks from which parts are made.

3.7 V8 HDi PF HYbrid4 ENGINE

The car's skeleton is an innovative part, developed with know-how from Peugeot Sport and the group's Research and Development Division.

Made of monolithic carbon, this central structure comprises only twelve pieces. It includes the front and rear struts, doing away with the need for offset panels. The torsional stiffness and weight of the structure are then optimised, with the weight measured at barely 100 kg.

Bolted to the carbon shell, the 3.7-litre hybrid V8 HDi PF engine and axles reflect the experience of Peugeot Sport, gained and developed on tracks the world over.

Cooled by pipes starting in the roof via NACA intakes, the V8 transmits its 600 hp to the rear wheels via a 6-speed sequential gearbox.

This power makes ideal use of the engine's compact proportions. 4.65 m long, 2.20 m wide, 1.13 m high, weighing 1,100 kg. Fitted with tyres specially developed by Michelin, 275/30 at the front and 345/30 at the back, the 20" rims have their hubs held to the structure by a double triangulated link and in-board suspension at the front and rear.

Intelligent, the HYbrid4 technology recovers kinetic energy normally lost during braking. Stored in lithium-ion batteries, this energy is then automatically redelivered during acceleration, boosting power by an additional 80 hp. The driver remains unaware of the management of this function, something that presented a real challenge. The engine technicians had to make it work on an engine that, in competition, operates at extreme levels.

With less than 2 kg per horsepower, Onyx achieves its high performance without impairing the purity and elegance of its style. To do so, Onyx is equipped with a flat carbon pan that creates a powerful ground effect. In this way, it was possible to limit aerodynamic parts to a strict minimum, by extensions to the carbon-fibre structure and by the mobile spoiler that loads the rear axle during braking. This is achieved by four 380 mm carbon discs at the front and 355 mm at the rear.

CONCEPT BIKE

For the Onyx Concept bike, Peugeot Cycles' designers drew inspiration from the Onyx to design an against-the-clock bicycle that projects the brand into the future with a modern, efficient style.

The stretched, controlled lines of the monocoque carbon frame optimise the aerodynamics of the Onyx Concept Bike.  Also made in this material, the large 800 mm wheels and saddle stem are profiled for overall performance. Nothing will disrupt your journey!

Thus, the cables, brakes and battery are fully integrated. The battery provides power to the aerofoil-profile control panel, where the cyclist intuitively finds the electric controls for changing speed.

CONCEPT SCOOTER

Cities are changing and mobility products with them.  At the crossroads between motorised two-wheelers and cars, the Onyx Concept Scooter offers an original and innovative alternative on three wheels, capable of transforming itself into a motor-cycle or a scooter, as needed or desired.

Deriving its style influences from the brand's cars, this 2-in-1 supertrike has an athletic silhouette with sculptured lines and an extra-wide 200/50 R17 rear tyre that breathes the spirit of hypersport motor-cycles.

Sized for use in open spaces, designed for urban use, the Onyx Concept Scooter's intelligent design allows the rider to choose between a motor-cycle or scooter style of use. There are two possible configurations combining driving pleasure and practicality.
